Q & A

Q: Should I upholster a set of chairs I acquired from my mother-in-law?

A: You could have a priceless antique on your hands or just a nice set of chairs. First and foremost, it is important to figure out the quality of the frame. This is impossible to discern unless you know what to look for. Having 30 years of experience and seeing some 16,000 pieces of furniture usually helps. If she put it together herself from a box she bought at Pergament, I'd say probably not. Furniture made these days is made of garbage. An old piece has a better chance of being built well. It's hard for me to tell without seeing the chairs.

Q: I'm afraid my sofa will not fit into my new home. What can I do?

A: This happens surprisingly often. Old furniture, new doors and vice versa can cause quite a problem come moving day. We can disassemble your sofa, and put it back together in your new home. This avoids any scraping of the walls or breaking of the furniture. It also ensures that nothing inside your sofa will become dislodged in the moving process.

Q: I have a very large sofa in my home and would prefer a smaller sofa. Is it possible to use the same sofa?

A: Of course! We can cut your sofa and recreate it to be any size you want. You may even choose to make two love seats out of your sofa. We can do that too.

Q: If I'm supplying my own fabric, how many yards will I need?

A: This, of course, is better answered when I'm looking at the actual piece to be reupholstered. On average, I'd say an armchair requires about 7 yards, and a sofa requires about 15 yards. This also depends greatly on the amount of cushions, the need for pattern repetition, and the amount of extras, like a skirt, an arm cover, a throw pillow, etc.
